Filipino‑Australian Theatre Maker, Director & Creative Facilitator
About Roman
Born in Cebu City, Philippines, Roman Berry discovered theatre after migrating to South Australia. Trained at the Drama Centre, Flinders University, his career has spanned Melbourne, London and beyond — from Miss Saigon and Melbourne Theatre Company to a decade directing new works in London's Off West End. He served as Artistic Director for the Commonwealth Youth Games Ceremonies and is Artistic Director of Divergent Theatre Collective, championing new, diverse and community-driven work.
Leadership & Curation
Roman facilitates weekly theatre workshops for international students at The Couch International Student Centre and directs community showcases including Kasaysayan. He also facilitates creative expression workshops for young people and community groups through Flying Fox.
Artistic Practice
Roman's work spans directing, movement direction, devising, dramaturgy and facilitation — grounded in embodied cultural knowledge, physical storytelling and collaborative authorship. He is the creator of the Tinikling Devising Methodology, first conceived during his Vitalstatistix Adhocracy residency and continuing to evolve through ongoing research and community practice. His work with La Mama's Mother Tongue Festival, the Filipino‑Australian community, and emerging artists reflects a commitment to trauma‑aware, culturally grounded theatre-making.
